Bon dia, yen di alegria.

My name is Pearl Dumfries, also known as WATRA.

Next to my educational background in Social Pedagogical work and Social work, I am a Multilingual Vocalist, a Songwriter and a Musician.

Born in Amsterdam, being raised in Aruba and having Haitian-Surinamese roots I have always been surrounded and inspired by many rich cultural, musical and creative environments. I grew up in a household where music and creativeness was and still is a big part of our daily routine. The alarm clocks were turned off in hopes of sleeping in on the weekends, only to be awakened by my parents singing and playing music, LOUD, from their stereo speakers. In my family we speak and breathe in melodies. It did not take long before I started writing my first singles in my journal at the age of 10.

“Songwriting gave me comfort and a creative understanding of my emotions as a young kid.”

From participating in school talent shows to performing original work with my school band called 'Siete Caminos' we got selected to be part of the The Life I live Festival: Skooltainer in The Hague(2014). My interest in live performance grew. In 2017 I had a fun time performing in the Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival with the Siegried Hart Trio.

Alongside festivals, I performed in other live and online performances. Shortly after I had the opportunity to join a live online course; Aruba Vocal Jazz lessons by Dr. Lenora Helm Hammonds. This encouraged me even more to sing, write and produce music.

Grateful for the lessons and memories of composing and sharing a stage with self taught musicians and many creatives. Participating as a teacher in the Summer Music & Performance camp(Aruba, 2021) has fueled my passion and purpose even more to empower a healthy creative outlet for children and adults.
